Looking for the top 100 best universities in Nigeria in 2020 or which university is the best in Nigeria 2019? – In Nigeria, the university is seen as the highest educational institution and is revered accordingly.
This has led to the rise of many universities in the country after the founding of the premier university of Nigeria; the University of Ibadan in 1948.
The universities have produced lots of gems, inventors, politicians, doctors, eminent barristers and two presidents of Nigeria where products of the university system.
As more and more universities continue to surface year after year, the competition gets stiffer and the rankings have never remained static. Some universities take a plunge down to lower positions while some climb higher into the top 10.
However, some of the first generation universities have been able to prove their mettle with others even as the competition heightens.
These universities have made themselves the first choice for secondary leavers seeking admission into higher institutions and they’ve cautiously coveted the top ten’s in the rankings making them more admirable than they already are.
Some of these universities include; the University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University-Ife, Ahmadu Bello University-Zaria, University of Nigeria-Nsukka, Covenant University-Ota, University of Lagos, University of Benin, Federal University of Agriculture-Abeokuta, University of Ilorin and the University of Port Harcourt amongst others.
There are certain indices used to rank these universities in Nigeria.
These indices are not entirely up to the standard used globally especially in developed countries which is understandably regretful due to the challenges faced by the Nigerian University system.

These days, several rankings have cluttered the net without judging from certain prerequisite parameters.
However, the age of the first generation universities can count for something, if not for anything else their class of distinguishable alumni and the volume of research work carried out under their domain.
Also, their infrastructure have stood the test of time beating all odds that were up against them.
Their online publications and researches published in international journals is also something to consider as well as their fine crop of academia.
Who are the people responsible for the rankings?
Well, these days Nigerians rely on external rankings from the five international rating organizations for determining which university is the best in Nigeria.
The five international rating organization are: Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings and Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.
Each of these international ranking bodies have their own ranking methodology but they all share some methodologies in common like the quality of education, quality of faculty and alumni employment.
Most of their criteria, however, are beyond the attainment of Nigeria universities so they rank them with some of the few criteria they can meet up with like web presence, alumni employment, infrastructure, number of published papers, employer’s perspective, achievements, research output, per capita performance and a few others.
