personal brandingPersonal Branding: One Thing You Should Get Right in 2020 – Who are you? What do people know you as? How do they react when you come around? How do they talk to you? Do they take you serious? What was your resolution this year?

If you made any and personal branding wasn’t on the list of your resolutions, then I can tell you that 2018 will be one of the years you will look back to and wish you had branded yourself and made better use of it.

The world has migrated online and 2018 is the year that will cause more migration than we have ever seen.

There’s absolutely nothing that isn’t getting online now, from your refrigerator in the kitchen to handheld devices, everything is becoming internet of things.

If all these things are coming online, have you asked yourself what you’re still waiting for?

Now’s the time to get yourself online, people should be able to Google your name and find relevant links to just about anything in your life.

Forget about privacy, nothing is private anymore, as we continue in life things are evolving, your smart phone is collecting as much data you’re feeding into it, that simple innocent like on Facebook could say a lot about you.

Visiting a site, doing nothing and closing it, you have no idea how much data has been recorded from you.

You can’t help it, all you can do is control it.

The next question is why should you brand yourself?

It makes you standout
Imagine I went for a job interview at a media company and I came with my book that I had written on growth hacking.

Immediately I show it to the interviewer, 95% of the time I’ll be offered that job.

I can bet no one that came for the same interview came with a book that they had written.

Look like an expert
I don’t consider myself to be an expert, but I’m sure most people who read what I have written would happily call me an expert.

I even give one-on-one business advice to people because they believe I’m an expert when it comes to business and entrepreneurship.

Add value to people’s life
When you share your story, experiences or knowledge with people, you can add reasonable value to them.

Fame
This is one of the first things you will notice when you start adding value to people’s lives.

You will be surprised at the number of people who know you.

Cha Ching
Oh yes, we all love this part.

Brand yourself right and watch the money flow.

Here are some ways you can brand yourself this year:

Get a blog

I haven’t been writing there much because I have concentrated on creating back-links, so I write at other places like Medium and Quora.

Don’t worry if you don’t know what to write, just type anything in your head, go with the flow, it will be scary at first and you will believe it’s too mediocre or your English is bad, just keep writing and with time, you will see yourself improve.

At first writing 500 words was hard for me, after about 6 months of continuous writing, I can easily write 2000 words.

I write everyday and last year was the year I took it serious since I decided to brand myself.

I have never read to-do list on how to write, I have never followed any rules.

The one rule I have never followed is the Search Engine Optimization(SEO).

The moment you follow that rule when you start newly as a writer, it begins to affect you because you aren’t delivering it as it’s coming from your mind, you’re now filtering it through your head for SEO.

With that said, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t optimize your blog, you should by all means make it optimized.

I’m just saying when you start concentrating on that, you won’t give your best piece and instead of writing for humans to read, you’ll start writing for Google crawlers.

Write a book

Every one can write a book, everyone should write a book and this is because I know everyone has a book in them.

There is always a story in everyone’s mind, there is some genius in everyone, we are all unique, so there’s always something everyone has to say.

Don’t say you’ve never written before so it’s going to be hard to do.

As long as you have taken a pen and scribbled down something for once in your life, read a few pages of a book or an article online, you’re already a writer.

Over 90% of people want to write a book but only 1% actually write.

I attended an event where I heard Gerry Robert speak, he asked a question before he started.

He asked how many people have wanted to write a book, many hands were raised, almost 5000 people.

He asked how many have thought about it for the last 5 years, about 4k were raised, he continued until he reached 40 years.

I was shocked to see that unto 100 hands were still raised.

I would be ashamed of myself if I have been thinking of writing a book for the past forty years!

My first attempt of writing a book was when I was still 12 years old.

I’m in my early 20’s and I still remember what I wrote.

I’m writing a book now.

Two books to be precise.

Read a Book

This is why it’s called personal branding, because you’re investing in yourself and reading books is one of the best ways of investing in one’s self.

I read a lot of books and most of what I share or write comes from what I have read over the years.

Mark Zuckerberg started a book club this year and his goal is to read a book in two weeks.

That’s 26 books by the end of the year!

With his tight work schedule, he still finds time to read books.

By the end of this year, he will have more knowledge than everyone that read no book.

Vloging or Pod-casting

Gary Vaynerchuk is one of the entrepreneurs I admire so much and he does this perfectly.

Vlogging is like blogging but using videos to convey or share the message instead of writing.

When he was doing videos for wine, he made videos 5 times a week for 18 months.

Those videos helped him turn his $3 million family business to a $50 million business in a space of 7 years.

He was able to place himself as a brand and make money at the same time.

He still does videos till now and doesn’t intend to stop.

Pod-casting is another way of sharing information using recorded audio.

Networking

If you call yourself an entrepreneur and you aren’t networking, then I don’t know what you’re doing.

I don’t know how you will scale the business, I don’t know how long that business will survive before it crashes and burns.

Networking is something I hold at heart, I make sure that wherever I go, I meet as many people as possible.

Making connections with people is one of the greatest resources you will ever have in your business.

A whole book was written on the power of Networking.

Social Networks

This is one of the most powerful medium, use them to make valuable connections with people.

If you see something good, share them.

Add your views in the comment box if you wish.

People following you or your friends are watching and seeing everything you do.

Whatever you do is creating a blueprint that will build a good or bad brand for you.

Always share useful information and give value when you use any of the mediums to brand yourself.

There are more ways to brand yourself, I would love to hear your views and opinion on them.
